Requirements

Important Note for Student Members

Please Note: Student members must upgrade to Provisional Member status before beginning their Log Book of professional experience. A Log Book from someone who is still a Student member IS NOT VALID.

The following is an extract from the CIP Membership Manual:

Student to provisional

2.14.3 A student may apply to be a Student member while enrolled in a recognized degree program in planning and ceases to hold Student membership one year after cessation of full-time enrollment in the planning program. Student members should upgrade to Provisional as soon as they find a job.

 

Qualifications For Membership

(For further and full information, please read "Schedule A" of the CIP By-Laws.)

 

Becoming a student member: applicant must

  • be enrolled in a degree program in planning which is recognized as defined in Sentence 9.1 of this Schedule, or

  • have been granted a recognized degree in planning as defined in Sentence 9.l of "Schedule A" of the CIP By-Laws and is enrolled in a degree program.

Note: A Student member may retain status as a student member for 

~ a maximum of one year following completion of a degree program or

~ until elected as a provisional member, whichever comes first.

 

Becoming a provisional member: applicant must

  • Recognized Degree 

    • have a recognized degree in planning as defined in Sentence 9.1 of "Schedule A" of the CIP bylaws

  • Related Degree 

    • have a degree in a field related to planning and

    • have obtained employment in the planning field

  • Unrelated Degree 

    • have a degree which is not related to planning and

    • have obtained employment in the planning field

Becoming a full member: applicant must

  • Recognized Degree: 

    • have been elected as a Provisional member,

    • completed a minimum of two years of responsible professional planning experience which must be recorded in a log book,

    • successfully completed an oral examination to the satisfaction of the affiliate

  • Related Degree: 

    • degree in a field related to planning

    • have been elected as a Provisional member

    • 4 years responsible professional planning experience recorded in a log book

    • successfully completed a written examination or portfolio requirement

    • successfully completed an oral examination to the satisfaction of the affiliate

  • Un-related Degree: 

    • have been elected as a Provisional member

    • six years of responsible professional planning experience of which four years must be recorded in a log book

    • immediate application to be a Member

    • successfully completed a written examination or portfolio requirement, and

    • successfully completed an oral examination to the satisfaction of the affiliate

  • Another Country: 

    • be a full member in good standing of the professional planning organization of another country, which organization is recognized by the Institute as having equivalent membership standards, and

    • successful completion of the examination or portfolio requirements of the Institute.

Becoming a Fellow: a Fellow is  

  • elected by a vote of the Fellows Nominating Committee,

  • a Member who has been in good standing for a period of not less than 10 years,

  • in the opinion of the Committee, has made an outstanding contribution to planning including a raising of standards in planning at the national level, has done work that is exemplary and who has been nominated in writing by at least six Members from more than two affiliates

Becoming a Non-practicing Member: applicant must

  • have either temporarily or permanently retired from practice in planning and

  • have made the request in writing.

Becoming a Non-resident Member:

  • Council may award a corporate member a non-resident status when the corporate member resides outside Canada and has made the request in writing.

Notes:

~ For persons resident outside Canada, Council shall exercise the authority ascribed to affiliates in this Schedule.

~ A person who has a degree in planning which is recognized by the professional planning organization in another country, which organization is recognized by the Institute as having equivalent accreditation standards, shall be deemed to have a recognized degree for the purpose of this Schedule.

Professional Practice Review Committee
The duties of the Committee are:
a) In accordance with Section 21 of the API Bylaw, to undertake preliminary investigations
   of complaints and report its findings to the Council.
b) To prepare a confidential annual report of its activities to the Council.
c) To make recommendations to the Council on matters within its jurisdiction.
d) To ensure that its activities are undertaken in strict confidence and to not divulge
    its discussions or findings to any person who is not a member of the committee, 
    the President or the Executive Director.
