Strategic
Action Plan
September

The
Atlantic Planners Institute is an association of
professionals in the Atlantic Provinces who are working in
community, land use, resource, environmental, facilities or
related planning. It has three distinct client groups : the
planning profession, planning students and the public. To
the planning profession it provides : first, opportunities
for high-quality continuing professional development;
second, a forum for the discussion and exchange of
information and opinions . To planning students it provides
assistance in their transition to a working professional
life in planning. To the public it provides information on
planning issues in their communities, in order to increase
their awareness and to encourage their participation in the
community planning process.

To
achieve and maintain an efficient and cost effective
process of fee collection and administration.

To
provide efficient management of the affairs of the
Institute in a manner that is accountable to the
membership.
-
Establish
Branch liason with Norval Collins to ensure regular
updating of membership lists, follow-up of non-payment
of fees and general administrative matters.

Provide
regular information to the membership through the
Newsletter concerning the disposition of their
membership dues.
-
Conduct
annual audits of API accounts and accounting
procedures.
-
Continue
the ongoing degree recognition programs for the two
planning schools.
-
Revise
the policy on conference funding in the API policy
manual to reflect a profit/loss sharing arrangement
and policies to guide conference planning by the
Branches.

Recognize
contributions of members to the Institute and to the
profession.
-
To
have an efficient administrative process for handling
applications for membership in the Institute.
-
To
create an awareness of membership requirements and
standards within the membership of each Branch.
-
To
ensure the availability of information on membership,
the Institute and persons to contact for information.
-
To
increase membership in API by promoting the benefits
of membership.
-
Review
membership procedures and standards and implement
measures to increase efficiency of the process and
monitor progress of student and provisional members.

Identify
additional examination markers.
-
Reorganize
the membership committee to ensure representation from
each Branch. Provide resources to ensure the committee
can meet once per year.

Prepare
a standard package of information to be sent to all
new members.
-
Conduct
a membership survey to construct a membership profile
and publish results for the membership. (Conducted by
National Council)

Establish
a program to be held in conjunction with the annual
conference to provide information on membership
matters - preparing for the exam, what is expected at
an oral interview, current membership issues, etc.

Provide
Branch support for recruitment and membership
activities.

Initiate
a membership drive.
-
Establish
an API home page on the World Wide Web and provide
membership information for existing and potential
members on it.

Set
up a short course to prepare applicants for the CIP
Membership Examination.

To
increase opportunities for continuing education and
professional development of the membership in matters
relevant to the practice of planning.
-
Organize
annual conferences that are accessible to the
membership and relevant to the profession in Atlantic
Canada and which provide opportunities for an exchange
of ideas among members.

Encourage
continuing education activities within the Branches
through financial and other support.

Continue
to provide direct support to the Technical University
of Nova Scotia for the annual Planning Modules.

To
keep the membership informed of activities of the
association and issues affecting the profession.
-
To
provide opportunities for members to direct the
activities of the API Council through the format and
agenda of the Annual General Meeting.
-
Continue
the publication of the Planners Pen - the newsletter
of the Institute as a vehicle to inform members of
Council activities, promote the work of the membership
including student projects, and as a forum for the
exchange of ideas among the profession.

Encourage
Branch activities which address planning issues at the
provincial level through exchange of information and
ideas among branches and by providing financial
support for such activities at the branch level.

Set
the agenda for the Annual General Meeting in such a
way as to provide the membership with meaningful
opportunity to direct the activities of API Council.

Encourage

Establish
an API World Wide Web home page

Provide
opportunities for feedback to API Council on an API
World Wide Web home page.

To
encourage effective communication between planning
schools and the profession through exchange of
information, ideas and expertise.

To
encourage the participation of students of planning
schools in activities of the Institute.

Hold
at least one Council meeting per year in Halifax to
provide an opportunity to meet with planning students.
-
Promote
the work of planning students by providing
opportunities for students to exhibit their work at
the annual conference, encouraging exhibits of work at
municipal and provincial planning offices and other
public places.

Continue
student scholarship award and ensure that student
members are aware of and apply for the CIP student
scholarship.

Through
the student representatives, organize transportation
to the AGM and conference to encourage participation
of student members

Hold
an orientation session at both TUNS and NSCAD in
September to inform students of the Institute and its
activities.

To
communicate the goals and objectives of the Institute
to the general public in Atlantic Canada.

To
raise awareness of the Planning Profession throughout
he region by speaking out on issues that affect
planning and the planning profession in the Atlantic
Region.
-
To
recognize and promote the work of members of the
profession in the region.
-
Ensure
that work conducted in the Atlantic region is
represented in the CIP planning awards program.
-
Letter
to Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador re cuts in
community planning.
-
Establish
an API World Wide Web home page
-
Simultaneously
publish the Planners Pen on an API World Wide Web home
page, to reach and promote discussion among an
audience beyond the membership.
-
Use
Planners Pen for more editorial comments to promote
discussion.
-
Use
World Wide Web home page and api-l e-mail discussion
list to promote discussion on issues.
