Sustainability of Traditional Settlement Patterns

in the 21st Century

The Atlantic provinces are steeped in tradition and cherish many of the traditional ways of life. At the same time they wish to develop modern, contemporary societies that can successfully compete on a global basis. Can traditional settlement patterns and economic activities meet both of those objectives? Are small, diverse and dispersed communities capable of competing against, or thriving with, the mega-centres that are the engines of the world’s economies?

Sub-themes include:

  • Settlement sustainability
  • Governance - municipal/regional/provincial
  • Energy Costs - new/alternative technologies
  • Natural resources - primary industries
