Sustainability of Traditional Settlement Patterns

in the 21st Century

The Atlantic provinces are steeped in tradition and cherish many of the established ways of life. At the same time they wish to develop modern, contemporary societies that can successfully compete on a global basis. Can traditional settlement patterns and economic activities meet both of those objectives? Are small, diverse and dispersed communities capable of competing against, or thriving with, the mega-centres that are the engines of the world’s economies?

Sub-themes to include:

  • Settlement sustainability & transportation
  • Governance - municipal/regional/provincial
  • Sustainability and adaptation in design
  • Integrated Community Sustainability Planning

Social activities to include:

  • Local musical entertainment after the banquet featuring the Lazy Jacks
  • Mobile workshops on Friday afternoon:
    • Charlottetown "Original 500 Lots" walking tour by Catherine Hennessey
    • Summerside Historical Tour, including rhubarb punch and homemade ice cream (car-pooling to be arranged)

Wyatt Heritage Properties walking tour, Retracing Steps, introduces participants to the stories, landscapes and architecture of historic Summerside.  The tour begins on the waterfront at Spinnaker’s Landing (By the Tourism Information Centre) and winds its way through the historic district of the port city.  The guide will relate the entertaining history of how Summerside came to be, since anyone who knows the grid system realizes it was never planned.  Numerous industries have thrived in the town over the years.  Those with a vivid imagination may see a fox man strolling down Water Street with the furs slung over his shoulder. There will be name dropping over the course of the stroll, and the opportunity to view numerous historic homes.  Halfway through the tour there will be a stop at the Lefurgey Cultural Centre for homemade ice cream.  Retracing Steps is an informative and entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

Pre-Conference Professional Development Workshop:

[Please note that registration is now full for this workshop]

  • The built environment and healthy populations: policies and planning

    • A workshop for practicing planners designed to strategize about the most effective mechanisms to plan for healthy communities and appropriate policy direction. The session, part of current research being undertaken at Dalhousie University, will explore the relationship between the built environment and health (especially obesity), looking specifically at the way in which young people use the built environment. One objective of the study and the session is to determine what kinds of government investments and policies could be most effective in encouraging physical activity and healthy eating in this age group.
