2006 API Volunteer Awards

During the API Conference and AGM banquet in Saint John on October 20, 2006 four awards were made, two for exceptional volunteer service to the Institute and two for retiring Council Members.

The Volunteer Awards were made to the following:

 

Mark Poirier, MCIP

Mark Poirier, MCIP, has been a member of the Institute for many years. Always a strong supporter of API, Mark has served on several Councils over the years. Mark was instrumental in setting up and maintaining the annual planning module at the Dalhousie University School of Planning. He spent many years working on the accreditation processes for the NSCAD and Dalhousie planning schools. Mark played the lead role in setting up the first API website and the Yahoo open public site which has served as a key information exchange mechanism for planners and those interested in planning. He was, for 10 years, the API website and remains the Yahoo group site moderator.

 

Tammy Wilson, MCIP

Tammy Wilson, MCIP, is a long time member of API. She first assisted API as a member of the working committee on planners legislation in Nova Scotia. In 2000, Tammy joined the Executive of the Nova Scotia Branch as a Member-at-large and continued the process leading to the Nova Scotia legislation. In 2005, she rejoined the Nova Scotia Branch Executive as Chair of the Special Projects Committee which rekindled the the legislation project. That not being enough, following passage of the legislation, Tammy undertook the lead in the preparation of the new Bylaw required under the Nova Scotia planners statute.

Two awards for retiring API Council members were made:

 

Barry Zwicker, MCIP

Barry Zwicker, MCIP, was honoured for many years of service to API. A long time member of the Institute, Barry served on several Councils and was elected President in the early 1980’s and again in 2003. As Past President of API, he served with distinction as the API representative on the Council of the Canadian Institute of Planners. He was elected President of the Canadian Institute of Planners in 1985. Barry has been a strong supporter of the introduction of Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) and served as Chair of the CPL Committee during his last two years as the API President. During his time as President of API, he provided the vital leadership required as the profession matured. Barry remains the Chair of the CPL Committee for 2007.

 

Alex Forbes, MCIP

Alex Forbes, MCIP, has served API with distinction as the Councillor from New Brunswick. Alex was elected as the API President in 2001 and served until 2003. Following completion of his term as API President he served on the Council of the Canadian Institute of Planners. He was appointed Vice President of CIP and, during this time, provided the leadership required to launch the public presence initiative undertaken by CIP. Alex has also played an important role in promoting increased professionalism of planners, including the the development of the planners legislation in New Brunswick which was passed by the Legislative Assembly in 2005.
