Project Site is Selected
In February of this year, the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs was asked by organizers of the Habitat for Humanity project, to help find a site to accommodate the construction of 10 new single family homes within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
An undeveloped multiple family site, located at the northern end of the department=s Forest Hills land development in Cole Harbour, was chosen for the project.

The site is approx. 3 acres in size, has two access points, and is serviced up to the boundary with both sanitary and storm sewers. The department=s planning staff, began work on a preliminary development plan and the required engineering drawings. The proposed layout was to utilize the entire site for 10 to 12 single family lots, a fully serviced road and a park area. Since the proposed roads and services were to be taken over by the Municipality, everything was to be designed and constructed according to their latest development standards and regulations.

After having met with municipal staff to review the first few concept plans for the site, it became apparent, that the design standards in place for new residential development do not allow for any deviation, regardless of the nature or scale of the proposal.
