A row of shops and offices was planned as an integral part of the subdivision. They have a prominent location on Young Street, at the southern edge of the Hydrostone.
The entrance to the shops is directly to the sidewalk. Originally there were apartments on the upper floors. The architectural design resembles that of the housing blocks.

A small local park on the other side of Young Street provides a setting for the shops and introduces variety into the streetscape.

This has been an active commercial district for almost eighty years. In the 1990's, it has undergone a changeover from local services such as a hardware store to fashionable restaurants and boutiques. The commercial strip now attracts customers from across the city.
