The Public Realm

• conceive of and manage public realm as an integrated whole:
  • restore key public spaces to high quality public use
  • (Grand Parade, Province House grounds, Cornwallis Park)
  • consider other public spaces as part of a larger network
  • (Public Gardens, Point Pleasant Park, Commons, other smaller parks and squares)

• require new development to meaningfully relate to and contribute to public realm:
  • redevelop part of large parking lot adjacent to Cornwallis Park (in front of Barrington Street Superstore) to enhance edge of park and add vitality to street

• strengthen east-west connections between downtown and waterfront

• emphasize pedestrian primacy in downtown as general guiding principle:
  • plan and manage circulation as interconnected network
  • develop continuous pedestrian/bicycle thoroughfare along waterfront from naval yards to Point Pleasant Park
