• until 1950's:
  • compact city
  • integration between places of work and living

• public and civic life expressed in:
  • public realm
  • streets
  • squares, parks and other open spaces
  • public buildings

• key 1950's moves that affected established urban fabric:
  • slum clearance to redevelop land and increase tax base
  • desire to move traffic through CBD

• both were detrimental to:
  • basic structure of city
  • quality of public space
