Halifax Downtown Up to the 1960's
- Some key initiatives that affected downtown urban form:
- Grand Parade (1749) - oldest public square in Canada
- Halifax Common (1763) - oldest park in Canada
- Granville St. facades rebuilt after 1859 fire

- railway station relocated near south harbour terminals (1920's-30's)
- establishment of Birks and Eatons on Barrington St.
- Stephenson Report (1957) called for:
- strengthening Spring Garden Road and Gottingen St. retail areas
- clearance of 8.8 acres of poor housing in the vicinity of Market and Jacob Streets
- 16 acres were cleared
- over 1,600 residents mostly rehoused in public housing
