Nitisudarmo, Woko, "Improving Infrastructure Facilities in South Gombong, Kebumen, Central Java - Indonesia: Potential for Regional Tourism and Economic Development"

In the South Gombong area of Kebumen 'in Central Java, Indonesia, there are several tourist attractions primarily visited by domestic travelers. Some of the tourism attractions in this area are very rarely visited, although they possess great natural beauty. This area also provides a significant share of local products for the region. These factors have a potential for ameliorating local and regional tourism and economic development. The problem that exists, however, is the lack of infrastructural facilities in the area.

The purpose of this study is to develop a planning strategy for improving infrastructural facilities, and for stimulating "nature" tourism and economic development in the area. An effort will be made to consider the potential impact of sub-development on the environment, and to suggest ways of minimizing environmental degradation.

By- using examples relevant to potential and existing resources, this study focuses on various aspects of tourism, infrastructure, environment, and public participation. Economic considerations will be used in the analysis of analyze infrastructure development with a focus on transportation. Tourism and infrastructure development, however, are more successful in supplementing the local economy when the scale of development is well matched with local resources and institutions (Loukissas, 1977).

Without careful planning, improvements in infrastructure and tourist facilities in South Gombong might threaten existing environmental stability. To minimize these potential negative impacts and to maximize positive impacts to the environment, community and environmental approaches are employed 'in the improvement of touri sm and economic development 'in the area.
