O'Connor, Mary Clare, "Solid Waste Management and the Role of the Municipal Planner: Involvement, Legislation and Tools for Implementation"

Solid waste management has been the subject of much controversy and concern in recent decades. Developing a concrete system for managing generation and subsequent accumulation of solid waste is necessary. The system of Integrated Solid Waste Management is identified as a model to be employed in municipal units. This system recognizes the need for the integration of programs to reduce, recycle and to dispose of municipal solid waste.

The success of an integrated approach is dependent on teamwork incorporating multidisciplinary action. The roles for municipal planners as part of this team are examined. The mechanisms which enable support to planners in this process are also examined through case study. Finally, recommendations for entrenching solid waste management in the planning process are made.
