Thomas Anne (Wagener) "Perspective on Planners"
The purpose of 'Perspective on Planners' is to learn more about planners. Finding out more about who planners are, what interests they have, what roles they play in the profession, the various ideas and influences they have, and what characteristics they share, may help us begin to better understand what planners do.
Eight Halifax Metropolitan Area planners were interviewed to collect information from which observations were made about planners. The planners include two Directors of Planning for local municipalities, two private sector planners who are involved in running locally based companies involved in planning, one planning educator from each of the two Metro area planning schools, and two local planning (community) activists.
From information collected in the interviews I have attempted to describe the different roles that planners play in the profession, as well as develop a profile of planners, as a group, addressing what planners are and what they do. Finally I have made some statements on what I feel it is planners should be. This will perhaps serve in the ongoing debate within the planning profession regarding who we are and what we do.
